Guest Blog: Vegetarian Pig Slop and Heat Wave Rasslin - ACW's Distrust, Dismay and Antisocial Behavior '11 Review

Brandon Stroud needs no introduction, but I'm going to give him one anyway. He's the managing editor at With Leather and is a huge supporter of indie wrestling, especially Chikara and in his current hometown of Austin, TX with Anarchy Championship Wrestling. He went to their latest show, Distrust, Dismay and Antisocial Behavior '11, and here's his live report, complete with pictures!

Texas is currently experiencing a heat wave that has taken us into 700+ consecutive days of 100+ degree heat. High school football coaches and players have died from exposure to the sun. Sprinklers are getting installed everywhere because it's rained like 3/4th of a time since March. I don't know what's going on with the world's climate, exactly, but I thought it would be a good idea to attend Anarchy Championship Wrestling's Distrust, Dismay and Antisocial Behavior 2011 and sit for four and a half hours in an open-roof bar in direct sunlight to watch professional wrestling.

TH already posted some basic results for the show, and if you're interested in that sort of thing I urge you to head over to their home page or their roster page to find out more. I've been to nearly every show since I moved to Texas last August with a few exceptions (including one with Paul London I missed for King of Trios... but that worked out all right) so I value myself as an increasingly-learned perspective on the promotion.

That, or I'm semi-popular on the Internet and write about them a lot.

- The pre-show started with a battle royal to determine the third participant in a triple threat elimination match for the ACW Championship, and I am confidently in full-on child mark mode when I tell you how much I love cheesy, shitty over-the-top-rope battle royals. Battle royals are like NBA games: you don't have to start watching them until they're almost over, and any fun you have before that is made for yourself.

The show featured an absolute gaggle of people I (and the ACW Superfans who usually sit in front of me) had never seen or heard of, and a few of them made appearances here. That's one of my favorite parts of an independent wrestling show, the "okay, so who's THIS guy" thing. Sometimes they're terrible, sometimes they end up being your favorites. I had no idea Picture Perfect Portia Perez would make me wobbly-kneed trying to get a picture with her when I was watching her wrestle literally nobody in Cleveland half a decade ago.

Jessica James won the battle royal and is four feet tall and adorable, but she ate it pretty hard in that title match, gotta say.

- The selling point of the show for most was the return of the "Godfather of Anarchy" Jerry Lynn. I wasn't around when Lynn ran in ACW, but TNA-be-damned if Lynn doesn't look and move exactly like he did 15 years ago. Maybe he was having fun. Maybe it was the fact that ACH (who I again will talk up here as the craziest and best athlete I've probably ever seen in a wrestling ring) entered to "Walk" by Pantera with a fake Bill Alphonso and did Rob Van Dam's taunts and intro posing. Regardless, Lynn is on point, and this show was one of those little reminders that if Impact could understand that 1) wrestling is supposed to be fun and 2) we're supposed to LIKE the people we're watching, they could be something more than they are.

The match also featured Rachel Summerlyn, who continues to be progressively more beautiful every time you see her and a great conversationalist about both David Otunga and vegans in wrestling, and Shawn Vexx, who enters to Jay-Z's "Public Service Announcement", and if you don't instantly think that's the best indy wrestling entrance theme ever, you are a pleeb.

- I'm not doing a Best and Worst format for this, but I have to give both a Best and a Worst to the Angel Blue vs. "Five Star" Amanda Fox match. It came right in the middle of the show, and despite plastic cup of water after plastic cup of water I had to go into the bar part of the bar and not roast myself for five minutes. The Best part is Amanda Fox, who looks like she probably shouldn't be a thing but ends up being really kinda great, and the Worst goes to Angel Blue, who got the win. Her butt still looks like toilet paper.

See, I'm getting so into it that I'm even saying affable things about the people I shoot don't like.

- The selling point of the show for ME was a Texas Bullrope Match between Lillie Mae and Portia Perez. I'm a fan of both -- Lillie always puts on a good match, and anybody who has read four sentences of wrestling talk from me has seen Portia in two of them. This match stemmed from ACW's Queen of Queens tournament when Portia bashed Lillie in the face with a wrench during the opening ceremonies and took her out of competition. Lillie challenged Porita to a bullrope match, and while the rope wasn't exactly tight around their wrists (which sucked a little, but hey) they still beat the shit out of each other. Lillie got the win when she hogtied Porita's legs and dumped pig slop on her head. Well, a backslide won it, but that was the actual win.

Portia is always getting stuff dumped on her head when I'm trying to meet her. The first time she wrestled Lady Poison and got green poison gland goop all over her face. The second time she got Gory Bombed into a birthday cake by Rachel. Last night, it was pig slop. Vegetarian pig slop, at least, as confirmed later by Lillie.

But sometimes things work out for the best. ACW Superfan Anna just said "come on" and dragged me backstage (upstairs) and asked Portia to take a pic with me. I told her I was sorry for all the stuff that kept getting thrown on her. She sorta shrugged and rolled her eyes at me, and it was the coolest wrestler interaction I've had since Arn Anderson yelled at me. Here, want to see how happy my face can get?

B's cheesin', Portia's all like "I AIN'T CARE"

A few more quick observations so this doesn't turn into an essay:

- ACW Champion and fellow Cleveland Indians fan Davey Vega got the win over Jaykus Plisken (who is like the Pit Boss by a gigantic man) when Darin Childs interfered, and outside of me going OH OH GOD when Jaykus murdered poor little Jessica James with a backbreaker it was fun. Vega's cool because the things he does have weight, which is something missing from a lot of indy wrestlers. There's a big difference between stiffness and weight, I think. Sorta like the jump mechanics in a video game. Without weight, you don't know where the hell you're jumping.

- I got to shake Mat Fitchett's hand before he goes off to CHIKARA and become a thing, with the added bonus of telling him he's my girlfriend's favorite guy there.

- Matt Palmer and Lady Poison teamed up against Pierre Abernathy (who reminds me of a Raticate from Pokémon, although he's pretty goddamn funny and starting to win me over) and Athena. Palmer is always a favorite and if you don't like a woman with literal poison in her blood I don't know what to tell you. Athena's normally gorgeous diving top rope Stunner turned into a horrifying looking neckbreaker thing, and it wasn't a good night for seeing small female wrestlers walk away unscathed.

- Awesome Andy looks like somebody's not-great Create-A-Wrestler attempt at Low Ki. This was my first time seeing him in action, and he seemed pretty good. He was having some trouble with the ropes, though. Thankfully the Mohawk isn't a bar prone to chanting YOU FUCKED UP at everything, so that's a plus.

- On the same tip, another debuting Anarchist, Christian Rose, looks like a not-great Jon Moxley. Or the guy from Nip/Tuck. But HE turned out to be good, too, and it's nice when a guy from an indy scene I don't get to know about comes around. St. Louis is full of guys I need to learn more about.

- Bolt Brady's going to be a star somewhere, probably sooner rather than later.

- And... that's probably it. But I want to take every posted Internet opportunity I can to say thank you to Darin, Rachel, the lady at the merch table and pretty much everyone involved with ACW for giving me an awesome thing to do with some of my Sundays. I get to spend a good chunk of my Monday going through the Queen of Queens DVD. Good times.

The next show is at the Mohawk in Austin on the 18th of September, "The Evolution of the Revolution", and you should go. I'm not going to be there because I've got a Dodgers game to catch in L.A., but Darin Corbin and Mia Yim are already announced, so if you're anywhere in theoretical driving distance, make it.

Weekend Wrap-Up: ¡OLÈ!

Winner of BOLA '11
- El Generico took home this year's Battle of Los Angeles tournament title. The Generic Luchador bested PWG World Champion and bitter rival Kevin Steen in the finals of the SoCal indie's big single elimination fray. Finlay as advertised made his appearance, losing to Steen in the first round. Willie Mack scored the upset of the tournament, besting Chris Hero in the first round. Also on the card, the the Dynasty of Joey Ryan and Scorpio Sky defeated the RockNES Monsters to earn a Tag Team Championship shot at the Young Bucks at a later date.

- AAW also ran a show Saturday night, and the highlight was a hard-hitting match between Arik Cannon and Steve Corino. Cannon won with his Glimmering Warlock (think the move that Alberto del Rio used to beat CM Punk for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam). Also on the card, Silas Young retained his AAW Championship over Gregory Iron, and MsChif made her return to wrestling, defeating Sassy Stephanie.

- ACW had a show last night, attended by With Leather's Brandon Stroud (who, hopefully, will be writing a detailed report, wink wink nudge nudge please write one PLEASE). It saw the ACW return of Jerry Lynn, who found some time to make it somewhere else besides Orlando and did something else besides costing RVD matches. He was defeated in the four-way main event for the Televised Championship by Shawn Vexx. Former Champion Rachel Summerlyn was eliminated first, oddly enough. Also on the card, Lillie Mae defeated Portia Perez, pouring a slop bucket on her head in the process. Ah, Texas.

- Finally, it's not Wednesday, but I'm linking you to some stories chronicling WWE being a soulless corporate entity. First up, Cageside Seats raises an awfully good point in how the fuck do you let a guy with torn ligaments wrestle two straight days and claim to have a "Wellness" Policy? Secondly, Harry Smith isn't exactly thrilled with his former employers after they treated personal effects that belonged to his father and his uncle Owen with very little regard for their integrity. Finally, Lisa Wright, a member of the Council of Unity, wrote a scathing letter to the Be A Star alliance, asking them to remove WWE from their site in response to the constant fat-shaming of a totally-not-fat Vickie Guerrero. In response, she got "intelligent feedback" from WWE fans and has rescinded that complaint, even though her complaint was completely valid. Hm, no, it was definitely the fans who pressured her and not corporate interests. Remember those stories the next time WWE asks you to stand up for it or some other pedantic bullshit request.

All About RD Evans:

His Matches - I can't speak about his matches as Robert Evans in the Texas indies, mainly because they're so hard to come by and because no one gives them the play that they deserve nationally outside of Brandon Stroud, who's in the thick of things down there. That being said, good Lord, he's awesome in Chikara from a comedic heel standpoint. His matches are just a spectacle. It doesn't matter if they're technically proficient or not. They're preeminently engaging. He might be so likable that it's impossible to boo him.

His Character - For lack of a better term, he has a silver tongue. Every time he opens his mouth, he holds the audience in the palm of his hand. He's so engaging to the "smart" fan, and to the more "mark" fan, he can incite a riot. Honestly, he's one of the most dynamic personalities in wrestling. It's clear in that in two East Coast feds he's in, he plays two completely different characters. That's clutch.

Why You Should Know Him - I know that people like to think of "The Internet" as this hive-minded group of people that like all the same things and all the same people. Yet, just ask about John Cena. Hell, even ask about Chris Jericho. You get a bunch of different opinions. Of those who know about RD Evans, it's an almost unanimous consensus that this guy is special and is a star and should be in WWE at least as a manager. He's that good.

Guest Blog: The Best and Worst of ACW Queen of Queens

Portia Perez about to be betrayed...
Brandon Stroud is the managing editor at With Leather. He's an unabashed fan of everything indie wrestling, especially female indie wrestling. He's also become a good friend of TWB, so of course if I was going to solicit a show review for Anarchy Championship Wrestling, I was going to solicit him. Here's his review of their latest show, the Queen of Queens, in his usual Best and Worst format.

One of the only downsides of my infant editorial power at With Leather is that I don't often get a chance to write about pro wrestling I love. It's hard enough to get over with a mainstream sports audience writing about WWE. If I wrote 10,000 words on Kenta Kobashi they'd call it "fake WWE". So of course I don't get to write about independent wrestling, which is where my bread has been buttered since Chris Benoit killed himself and WOW: Women of Wrestling went off the air.

That was a good show.

But hey, I'm lucky enough to live in one of the five or so cities in the country with a legitimately great independent pro wreslting company, Austin and Anarchy Championship Wrestling respectively. Yesterday they ran their annual "American Joshi Queen of Queens Tournament" in Live Oak, Texas, and because TH has become my straight up Bro Wrestling I'm going to give you an extremely truncated review of the tournament in "Best and Worst" style. If you want actual results, check out his weekend recap. I am not in the business of actually saying what happened on wrestling shows.

Best: Women's Wrestling is Awesome

I don't even really need the qualifier "women's" here, because it's not that women wrestling each other is good, it's that 1) good wrestling is good, and 2) it's nice to see women treated as normal, equal human beings who can do things without any real barriers or restrictions. Sure, ACW gets its share of horny woots and Dawn Marie "whore/crackwhore/herpes" chants, but someone like Rachel Summerlyn gets to be a popular wrestler because she's good in the ring and nice, and not because she's pretty. Although she's extremely pretty.

The tournament featured seven legitimately talented female wrestlers and Angel Blue. And what's great is that it didn't feature the same women you'd see in every other indy wrestling thing. Daizee Haze wasn't there, Cheerleader Melissa wasn't there, Sara del Rey wasn't there. I like those wrestlers a lot, but the Queen of Queens show did it right by throwing in some big names (like Serena Deeb and Daffney), pairing them with fresh, popular faces making a name for themselves (Christina von Eerie, Mia Yim, Rachel) and throwing in some people you'll be seeing everywhere in a few years (Athena, Amanda Fox if she keeps it up). And also Angel Blue.

So we got a cool show that worked as a statement on women's wrestling by being all about women's wrestling, but not really about being women. Does that make sense?

Worst: Angel Blue

I don't like to talk shit about indy wrestlers on the Internet, especially ones that are always hanging around down the street from my house, but Porita Perez hit Lillie Mae in the face with a wrench during the pre-match ceremonies and Angel Blue got subbed in instead. Lillie Mae is cool. She's unique, she's got a lot of personality. Angel Blue looks like that girl you knew in high school who got pregnant (you know the one, the one who wears blue eye shadow and smokes Newports and always looks like she's about to fall asleep) and she has "Angel Blue" written across her butt with a halo over it like she's a walking roll of toilet paper. And I think she called me "faggot" about eight times in one sentence. The conversation went something like this:

Me: "Unsatisfactory substitution."
Angel Blue: "WHAT"
Me: "Unsatisfactory substitution."
Angel Blue: "FAGGOT YOU SHUT UP FAGGOT I'D FAGGOT YOUR ASS IF YOU WERE SUCH A PUSSY FAGGOT."

...and I was like "ha, okay!" Then she lost about five minutes later. Homophobia is lazy, Texas wrestlers!

But Best: Literally Everything Else

The show was solid, even if ACW shows tend to run into the five and six and seven hour territory. I mentioned it a little on The Wrestling Podcast, but the talent in my local promotion is crazy. I grew up in a place where the biggest local wrestling stars were guys who shaved their heads and pretended to be Koloffs. Here we've got the crew from St. Louis (including ACW Champion Davey Vega, who put on a great match with Darin Childs, who deserves his own "best" for dropping 100 pounds), we've got guys like Masada flying in from Tournaments of Death to be there, we've got future stars like Matt Palmer and ACH (and I don't say that because they're guys I like locally, they are at least as good as anybody on the ROH undercard, and WWE should be driving trucks of money up to ACH's house and putting him on TV before he ages and his body stops working like that), we recently had Robert Evans, who is the talk of the...

Oh, wait, hold on.

WORST: Robert Evans Returns

I love Robert Evans. I went to King of Trios and ran up to Archibald Peck just to get a picture with him. I'm the guy in the crowd at Trios cheering like a mother for Peck. HOWEVER. His glorious return to ACW had to coincide with him turning on Porita Perez and costing her a repeat run as the American Joshi Queen of Queens, and no amount of understanding how wrestling works makes that okay for me. Maybe I'm doing it wrong by being the only person in the crowd cheering for Portia, but if that makes me wrong, I don't want to be right. Evans, you made me a sad sort of guy for the last half of that show.

Best: But Seriously, Rachel Summerlyn

Rachel is the best. She puts so much work into this thing, and she's always out there killing herself for it while it happens. She put on three good matches yesterday to take the trophy, and she delivered the closest thing I've ever heard to a sincere, humble thank you at the end. It wasn't Sean Waltman channeling Randy the Ram. It was somebody goodhearted having something happy happen to them. And that is cool.

Supplementary Best: Jessica James' Ankle Scrunchie

I don't think I have a picture of it anywhere, but Rachel's tag team partner Jessica is commonly barefoot, and she wears her scrunchie around her ankle. I don't know if I need to explain to you why that's great, but if I do, I'm not going to.

Worst: Portia Perez Doesn't Want My Money

It's my fault for deciding a shoot heel is one of my favorite wrestlers in the world. I've been a normal, sexually-nonaggressive fan of her work since Cleveland All Pro Wrestling, and I made sure to hit up an ATM before the show and bring cash for a t-shirt, an 8 x 10, and any number of miscellania she might've carried down from Canada in a gym bag. There was nothing. Athena had a new t-shirt, Christina Von Eerie had a file folder full of photos, Serena Deeb brought SHIMMER stuff. Portia sat upstairs. So I bought a Davey Vega shirt and went out for burritos after the show.

I am right here with my money and I want to give it to you. And you don't even have to be nice to me about it!

Best: Tip the Wrestlers

This is something a lot of wrestlers don't understand, and if you live in that Philly area where you get seven competing wrestling shows within a five mile drive every weekend you probably don't and can't do it, but if you go to an independent wrestling show and can buy something from a wrestler or pay them for a photo, do it. It's like a tip. They're probably getting a little money to be there, but it's not a lot. Think of it like a server's wage. Sure, the server is getting 3 bucks an hour to wait tables, so you don't HAVE to leave them a tip, but if you aren't the hole of a butt you see them working their ass off for you. Drop a couple of bucks every now and then. Skip the nachos or the second beer. Support independent wrestling, and do it for real. Because these are human folk, believe it or not.

Best/Worst?: Chris Hero

Chris Hero is supposed to be in Austin next month to take on ACH, and that is more or less the kind of thing that could make me dance around in happy circles. If WWE buys out the Kings of Wrestling and he doesn't show up, and Angel Blue ends up wrestling ACH, I swear to God...

Remember you can contact TH and ask him questions about wrestling, life or anything else. Please refer to this post for contact information. He always takes questions!

Weekend Wrap-Up: Holy Balls, What a Busy Weekend

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug
FUCK YEAH GREEN ANT
- Chikara's tripleshot over the weekend was greeted with great critical acclaim, as always, and some big things went down. For one, the Colony got the win over the BDK in the main event Saturday in Taylor. It was supposed to be a battle of the last two King of Trios-winning teams, but Ares had to drop out because of a family emergency. In his place was Sara del Rey. That's not the biggest news. For me, it was the Colony won via Green Ant tapping Claudio Castagnoli with the cloverleaf. I don't know about you, but I think that's awesome. So happy for Green Ant getting the big moment in the sun. Hell, it wasn't a very good weekend for the BDK at all, as they were getting their comeuppance like whoa. Friday night's main event saw Da Soul Touchaz finally get a measure of revenge on the devious Germans with a massive splash on Jakob Hammermeir by BlackDust himself, Willie Richardson. The Throwbacks got a win Saturday against Tim Donst and Hammermeir, and the Spectral Envoy of UltraMantis Black and Hallowicked took out the Donst/Hammermeir teaming on Sunday.

In other matches of interest, Eddie Kingston defeated Colt Cabana on Friday, but as the weekend progressed, he started getting harassed by one Vin Gerard. Gerard attacked Kingston after his 12 Large Summit match on Saturday against Mantis, and then again interfered on Sunday in his match against Hieracon. That could be interesting going forward. In Sunday's main event, the team of the Colony and Mike Quackenbush defeated FIST and Gerard in an atomicos match, via an Ant Hill splash on Johnny Gargano. Also, Frightmare retained his Young Lions Cup against Kodama.

As for the 12 Large Summit, here's a recap of those matches:

FRIDAY - Sara del Rey d. Icarus, Claudio d. Hallowicked, Mantis d. Fire Ant
SATURDAY - Quackenbush d. Ophidian, Kingston d. Mantis

Those results have a logjam at the top of Group A, with Quack, SDR, Claudio and Hallowicked all with two points. Group B has a similar jam, although with one fewer wrestler in the mix. Gerard, Kingston and Mantis all having two points. I have a feeling this one's going to be interesting to the wire, folks.

- Chikara's Sunday afternoon festivities weren't the only thing going on in Cleveland. Yes, AIW's Absolution 6 took place, and my my, it wasn't a very good day for Gargano at all. After eating the pinfall in the Chikara main event, he went and lost his Absolute Championship as well. Now, was it to Tim Donst, the guy he was scheduled to defend against, or was it against someone different who happened to work for Flexor Industries? At this point, I'm not sure as I can't find ANY results for the main event anywhere on the Internet. I wonder if this is intentional. I'll report as soon as I find out, but if Donst is the new Absolute Champion? Get ready to buy earplugs, because we won't hear the end of it. Also on the card, Kingston and a newly rejuvenated BJ Whitmer had one of the best matches of the weekend by observers. Whitmer got the duke. Also, Chest Flexor of the aforementioned Flexor industries got squishified by Tursas, in what I can only describe is perhaps the faciest thing Tursas has ever done.

EDIT: Good news, Donst isn't the new Absolute Champion. It's Shiima Xion, who cashed in his shot at the title via winning the Todd Pettingil Invitational Tournament. So, big month for Xion, who made his Impact debut last week, and is now the top guy in his home fed.

- Arguably the biggest event of the weekend was ROH's Best in the World, which saw two new Champions crowned. In the main event, Davey Richards defeated Eddie Edwards in a reportedly epic match that TWB superfan Billy Dunlevy claimed that "you'd have no soul" if you didn't enjoy. I'd say that was high praise. Also on the card, Christopher Daniels dropped the Television Championship to El Generico. Side note, if you bitch because they defended the title on something that wasn't on TV, then please reconsider your priorities and perhaps why you're a wrestling fan. Same deal goes if you bitched that Kevin Steen didn't honor his stipulation to leave town for good. I for one am thrilled as fuck to see Steen back in ROH, and even more thrilled that he turned on Steve Corino and Jimmy Jacobs, partially because he's one of the few guys that the smark maxim of "everyone's better heel" works for, but mostly because Steen vs. Corino most likely be the greatest brawl in the history of professional wrestling. I am not exaggerating. Okay, maybe I am, but it'll be damn close and damn cool. Also on the card, the World's Greatest Tag Team kept their titles, which makes sense, because the All-Nite Express isn't ready, the Briscoes are old hat and the Kings of Wrestling? Well, the scuttlebutt is that they have contracts on the table to go to WWE. VERY EXCITING SCUTTLEBUTT.

- Anarchy Championship Wrestling in Austin had their Queen of the Joshis Tournament yesterday, and I have results courtesy of With Leather managing editor and ACW superfan Brandon Stroud. Anyway, Rachel Summerlyn won the tourney, defeating Athena in the finals. Also participating were Portia Perez, Mia Yim, Christina von Eerie, Angel Blue, Serena Deeb and Amanda Fox. Outside of Summerlyn taking the tournament, the biggest thing to happen on the card was Perez's manager, Super Electro, unmasking to reveal himself as Robert Evans. He ended up costing Perez her semifinal match against the aforementioned Summerlyn. That's a feud that I'd move to Austin to see. Yes, I am dead serious. Here's a complete rundown of the tournament, because B-Stroud was kind enough to send it over to me:

ROUND 1:
Perez d. Yim, Summerlyn d. von Eerie, Athena d. Blue, Fox d. Deeb

SEMIFINALS:
Summerlyn d. Perez, Athena d. Fox

FINAL:
Summerlyn d. Athena

Also on the card, Davey Vega defended his ACW Championship against Darin Childs.

- Women's Superstars Uncensored held their Uncensored Rumble Saturday, which was won by Lexus over 22 other women. She'll get a crack at Mercedes Martinez, whose reign as Champion has now stretched over 44 defenses and 30 months, making her maybe the longest reigning Champion, male or female, around right now? I don't know, maybe some arcane NWA title that gets defended once every solar eclipse is longer held, but holy shit, for a fed that operates as regularly as WSU seems to, that's impressive. And remember, she defended the title like three or four times on EVOLVE cards too. Also on the card, Jillian Hall made her wrestling return, putting over Kristin Astara in her first match since leaving WWE. Cindy Rogers retired by defeating Allison Danger and both Sassy Stephie and the Boston Shore retained their respective Spirit and Tag Team Championships.

- And just in case you couldn't get enough indie wrestling news, CZW held its annual Tournament of Death Saturday, won by MASADA (who hopped on a plane and landed in Austin the next day to appear in ACW). He defeated Dysfunction, Matt Tremont and then Masashei Takeda for the win. He'll get a shot at Danny Havoc's Ultraviolent Underground Title, and the winner of that will go onto a garbage match Champion vs. Champion affair against Ryuji Ito, Big Japan's Deathmatch Champion. Doesn't sound like my cup of tea, but it's certainly a big deal. Also on the card, Sami Callihan, whose star is ascending exponentially in the indies, earned a chance at DJ Hyde's CZW World Championship by defeating Greg Excellent.

- And in one bit of Impact Wrestling news, Hulk Hogan dropped on his Twitter that the former TNA would be going on the road every other week to tape Impact starting in August. Good move for the company. Now if they can only stop booking shit shows...

All About Sara del Rey:

Her Matches - She's not the biggest competitor, even among her peers in the women's divisions or in SHIMMER. However, regardless of how much mass or height she has or doesn't have, she's always projecting a fearsome aura. She's definitely the prototype of the female bully, only one that isn't a larger woman. I think that makes her unique, whether she wrestles men or women. She's got some of the best strikes of any gender, especially her koppo kick which is strangely not clipped anywhere on Youtube (or maybe it is, and I'm lazy). I also absolutely love that she uses the piledriver as a finisher. Not a tombstone or a fire thunder or any other variant, but a regular, Memphis-style piledriver. She's definitely the best female wrestler in America right now, at least in my estimation.

Her Character - In nearly every promotion I've seen her, she seems to play down her femininity and work as a bully like she does in the ring. From the facepaint to the menacing scowl, she's the most unladylike of the current crop of women wrestlers. With her ROH/KoW-second character as the Queen of Wrestling, it works brilliantly. She's the new prototype of woman wrestler, one who, despite her obvious inherent good looks and somewhat petite size, doesn't rely on her looks at all and instead on her ability in the ring. It's a brilliantly simple character.

Why You Should Know Her - Honestly, I may be biased, because she's my favorite female in any wrestling promotion, but I think that Sara del Rey is must see whenever she's in the ring or even out of it. It's a good thing, because she's in very high demand. Whether it's in Chikara, SHIMMER, WSU, start-up women's feds or in any women's division, you can count on her being there and turning in great performances. She's clearly making her case to join her former peer Awesome Kong in WWE as part of a new movement of anti-Divas who can actually wrestle and do more than shake their tits and ass.

The thing is that she dowdies herself down and is actually very, very attractive when she accentuates her femininity. However, I think that it makes a very poignant point. She could very well make it to WWE by glitzing up, putting on a shit-ton of makeup and a push-up bra and trying to fit the mold. She doesn't, and I think she's a credit to women's wrestling for doing it. She's talented and it seems like she wants to make it on her merits as a wrestler. That's awesome to me, maybe the biggest reason why I think I have such a crush on her. She definitely has enough talent as well, maybe the most in my estimation.

SO yeah, you need to know her, because if she's not the best in the world, she's at least one of them. She's just about the biggest star remaining on the indie scene, maybe tied with Serena and Cheerleader Melissa, and if she's on a card in your town, I think you need to be there just to see what she does. I think that goes double for if she's in town with Chikara, because she's most likely wrestling intergender, and those are the best examples of her talent.
