Kings Reign Supreme: What I Hope for a Possible WWE Arrival for Claudio and Hero

Kings Reign Supreme!
If you believe the scuttlebutt, Claudio Castagnoli and Chris Hero, collectively known as The Kings of Wrestling, have an offer on the table for a WWE contract. The no-brainer answer would be to take it, but stranger things have happened. Hopefully, they will sign, because as much as I like watching them in the indies, I would rather see them every week on WWE TV and as a fan of theirs, I want to see them get paid as much money as they can get.

That being said, there's always that tricky question of "usage" that makes people take up the insane thought that they'd be "better off staying in ROH". Granted, there's almost nothing that would make me think staying in the indies is a better idea than going to WWE. However, I am a bit skeptical as to whether they'll get a good shake in terms of exposure. They could end up like CM Punk, exceed expectation and rule ass, they could be like Daniel Bryan (and admittedly, I don't think we've scratched the surface as to what we'll see from the former American Dragon) and get TV time but not get to the main event, or they could end up like Colt Cabana and be out of the company within a year. If they end up like Bryan, and again, Bryan's story in WWE is only beginning, then it's all good. However, there's one superstar whose career trajectory... well whose PROJECTED trajectory was exciting, fresh and totally game-changing for an entire division.

Yes, if the Kings make it to WWE, I would love to see them take on the Kharma role for the tag division.

Before she stepped away from WWE due to her pregnancy, Kharma was set to turn the Divas division on its head. She wasn't presented as your normal model-turned-wrestler who had silicone implants, and because of that, she got a genuine reaction. All signs pointed to a more "serious" women's wrestling division, one where Kharma would destroy the chaff and set up for a hero, be it Nattie Neidhart, Beth Phoenix or Kelly Kelly, to take her down and maybe establish that the Divas were deserving of more attention than, as Razor and I talked about last night, which of the males they were dating.

Of course, there's no stigma attached to the tag team division in terms of sexism, but it seriously is lacking of teams that could be considered legitimately over as a tandem. I mean, the only two that I think come close are Kane and Big Show and the former Champions of Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater. The former are a mongrel team of two fan-favorites-because-they've-been-around-since-the-dawn-of-time, and the latter got their overness more because of the groups they were associated with rather than a build as a team. Even then, with the dissolution of Corre, they even seem floundering. And at this point, neither team has the titles. In what may be the lulziest Tag Team Champion tandem in WWE history, Michael McGillicutty and David Otunga hold the Tag Pennies right now. Even though the Divas division had and still has its own problems, at least they have attention paid to them.

That's where the Kings should come in. Let them debut and destroy the Usos, Slater and Gabriel and then earn a title shot, where they win. Build them up as an unstoppable force whose teamwork is unmatched. Let them defeat Show and Kane, maybe not in short order, but convincingly enough. Give them mic time so they can develop their characters as more than just a win streak. Let them become the tag division so that when you build up a new set of challengers to them, be they an existing team like the Usos (who have potential but haven't had great opportunities to develop heat) or Slater and Gabriel, or another new team, either of guys who are on the roster or of a new team from FCW that's built up. That way, when the Kings lose the titles, it's a big deal. When they lose, they don't lose their heat because Hero and Claudio have been developing their characters through feuds and promos. It's all a matter of smart booking and attention.

Of course, this may very well be a pipe dream. Given that the failed TV writers have shown no desire to build a midcard or a tag division past a token "feud" that involves either bullshit parity decisions from week to week or a series of matches where it's a series of clean victories by one party while the crowd is expected to care when the result is never in question and there's no other factors making the losing party seeming like he's still got a story to tell. That being said, if they can try to revolutionize the Divas, why not tags?

That is, of course, if the Kings sign with WWE. There's still a chance that they might opt to stay with ROH, or that the scuttlebutt is just something that was sensationalized through being passed down the grapevine. Still, there's no doubt that Claudio and Hero deserve a chance to be in the top company in their field. Hopefully, the people potentially signing them know what they're getting.

Because it has the chance to be special.

Mixed Messages: Why Jerry Lawler Shouldn't Be Calling out the Bella Twins

The wrong messenger
So yeah, the Bella Twins came out and interrupted Kharma's heartfelt speech about her pregnancy on RAW, throwing insults at her like she was fat and disgusting and all that jazz. While this might have thrown me for a loop a couple of years ago, now, it doesn't bother me as much, given that the Bellas are faces, and Kharma will become a sympathetic babyface out of this... well, as sympathetic a babyface as a destructive monster-type wrestler can be. Obviously, someone in the announce booth had to step up for decency and common sense, right? They did. It was Jerry Lawler.

I have a HUGE problem with that.

You see, it's not because someone came to Kharma's verbal aid. Honestly, the babyface narrative SHOULD be that this kind of bullying is wrong and shouldn't be tolerated. However, Lawler is about as far down the list of guys delivering that message as you can get in WWE, next to John Cena and about every other heel in the company. Why? Just earlier in the broadcast, Lawler was making mean-spirited comments about Vickie Guerrero's weight. Yeah, they were tame compared to what he was saying about six months ago, but yeah, those comments alone would have made Lawler not the guy to deliver the message.

There's such a thing as moral authority. Lawler doesn't have it. You can't say that fat-shaming is wrong in one case, but it's alright in another. It's not a case of joking around either. Lawler and Cena spent a whole segment making fat jokes at Vickie because, in their minds, she wasn't a good person. She did abuse power, but at the same time, she obviously wasn't fat, and on Monday, it appeared as if she'd lost even MORE weight from November. But Lawler still made cracks.

In this culture of unrealistic portrayals of what bodies should look like, being called fat when you have the body type Vickie Guerrero has can those who may not be the most stable-minded into a destructive spiral towards anorexia. Granted, the people targeted do bear some responsibility to know what body types are healthy and not to let what other people think about them bother them, but at the same time, WWE is promoting this anti-bullying campaign (which laughably, the Bellas are spokespeople for) where they're trying not to get people to act that way. They're talking out of both sides of their mouth. It's stupid, and they should definitely be called out for it.

There are definitely different ways that Lawler could get heat on Vickie than fat-shaming her. If he were more noble in that endeavor, then yeah, maybe he could have spoken up, but he wasn't. The fact is, he was the last person who should have been taking the Bellas to task over their bullying rhetoric.

I Smash Your Trophy!

DESTROY THIS BELT
I finally got around to listening to the latest Fair to Flair podcast (and you should too, even if some of the stuff they talk about is already dated), and they were talking about the most reasonable endgames for Kharma (again, a bit dated, but hey, it was timely when they released it). The point made was that Kharma was more than likely to become larger than the Divas Championship. I agree with it fullstop, and I would hope that once she decimated the Divas, she'd move onto wrestling men, preferably as a tag team partner to Beth Phoenix. I WILL NOT GIVE THAT DREAM UP, YOU N00BS.

However, before she got to that point, she'd have to win the Divas Title, right? There'd be no way that she'd logically go from the women to the men without doing EVERYTHING there was to do in the Divas division, right? But what would she do with the Divas Championship after she won it, a prize that is so obviously below her that it's not even funny?

K. Sawyer Paul had the idea on the podcast that she should destroy it.

I was taken bit aback by the suggestion at first, but after a moment or so to process it, yeah, I'm totally digging on the idea. What other way would be fitting enough for the primal, savage Un-Diva to celebrate her more than eventual winning of the title belt? No other way, that's what. It really would be symbolic of her domination of the Barbie-type women in the WWE. But that's not what I wanted to write this post about.

When was the last time the WWE had a really good trophy-smashing or title belt desecration? I mean, when someone came in and destroyed another guy's accolade? Big Show going all hurricane mode on Jack Swagger's childhood trophy display was the most recent, but then again, those were props he brought in. When was the last time someone took a title or a trophy earned from a WWF/E-sponsored event and destroyed it? Was it Curt Hennig stealing and destroying Hulk Hogan's WWF Championship? Bret Hart smashing Bad News Brown's trophy?

Either way, it's an awesome visual, and a great way to get heat for a guy, obviously. It would also be a perfect opportunity to really associate someone with a title belt. For example, how about someone winning the spinner belt from John Cena, destroying it and having a new one made for him? Or someone foreign winning the United States Championship, destroying it and then renaming the title after the nationality the guy is. The heat would be off the charts.

So yeah, I really think they should do a good, old-fashioned accolade destruction. Hold a sham tournament and smash the trophy. Burn a title belt. Throw it in the incinerator. A trash compactor. SOMETHING! Why? Because it'd be awesome, that's why.

Congratulations, Kharma!

Happy happy!
My wife is currently five months pregnant with our first child, a son. It's a pretty overwhelming feeling, bringing life into this world, but it's a good feeling. So while I can't say I know exactly how Kharma felt last night in the ring, making her announcement to the world, I can say I'm married to someone who does. (Regardless of how equal a partnership men and women have, especially in raising a child, there's no doubt that during pregnancy, the women feel justifiably different because, y'know, they're the ones carrying the kid.)

I think anyone who'd dare to suggest this is a bad thing or something that's ill-timed is misinformed. There's never really a bad time to bring life into this world if you're a gainfully-employed adult. Given that Kharma is getting paid male wrestler money (reportedly) in the highest-profile wrestling company in the world, I'd think she's going to be okay. Given that the WWE gave her mic time not only to pour her heart out but to set up an angle for her return, I don't think they're too concerned about things.

Instead, let's join in wishing her good luck and a happy, healthy pregnancy and birth. Before we know it, she'll be back, stuffing the Bella Twins into lockers and doing everything we love about her in that squared circle.

Oh, and also, another reason why wrestling journalism sucks? The urge to get the scoop was probably impetus for Bryan Alvarez to post that note about Kharma being out for nine months last week, which pretty much kicked off rampant speculation, especially with the "nine months" time frame specifically. Don't tell me that it wasn't intentional either. I want to like Alvarez and Dave Meltzer, but at the same time, both guys do boneheaded shit that make me want to throw them in with the rest of the lot.

Instant Feedback: Memorable Memorial Day

If you excuse the technical difficulties and the uncharacteristic clunkiness of the Ziggler/Kofi match, this might have been a pitch-perfect RAW. Just amazing how much of what they did right. I mean, I'm buying more and more of R-Truth as a clinically insane guy one felony away from Arkham Asylum each week, and John Cena this week was a perfect canvas to play off of. Seriously, the main event and overrun were amazing television. Imagine that, Cena gets outsmarted and bothered, and it's great TV. Hmm....

The thing with RAW is that whenever the wrestling is good, the show tends to be better. Let's ignore the US non-title match to start; again, everyone has an off-night, even Dolph Ziggler. The Divas are a non-starter anymore, so I won't even bitch about them here (Although I will later in the week). They gave us a good bit of good wrestling this week. Punk vs. Rey? Awesome. Bourne vs. Swagger? Awesome x 2. Cena vs. Truf? Okay although with a VERY clever finish.

But it wasn't just the wrestling that was good this week. They continued building Alex Riley to the point where I think they may have a burgeoning star on their hands with him. I mean, they are playing the right strings with him, very reminiscent of the Flair/Perfect/Heenan turn saga in 1992. They're actually building an honest-to-God wrestling feud sub-the main event with Evan Bourne and Jack Swagger. They had a match with a clean finish last week, extracurriculars afterwards and then a clean, traded upset win this week? And then the finish to the main event, with Truf doing perhaps the best thing he's ever done and ever will do in WWE, throwing the soda into the face of the fan he was taunting at the top of the show? Holy shit, so good.

But the capper was Kharma's segment. First off, warmest congratulations to Kia Stevens, the person, for her pregnancy. As an expecting father, it's the best feeling in the world to be bringing life into the world. Second, it was amazing they let Kharma, the character, go out there and cut a heartfelt promo. Did it ruin Kharma's mystique? Yeah, it might have. Would it have been better to have her cold-cock Michael Cole or do something else that would have elicited a suspension? Maybe. Were the obviously baiting bully comments by the Bellas over the top? Given that they were the heels in the situation, no. Was it stupid for Lawler to come to Kharma's defense when he was doing the same thing to Vickie Guerrero even earlier in the show? Definitely.

That being said, I thought the segment worked and it was way better than I had expected it to be. It also gives them an earnest babyface that connected with the crowd to bring back in the future. Just the cap on a RAW that was unusually awesome tonight.

Layla Injured

So photogenic too...
Via Diva Dirt

Layla, after winning the biggest match of her career and looking to bust out as a singles star after splitting from former BFF and current retiree Michelle McCool, revealed via Twitter that she tore her ACL and MCL and will miss six months. Very tough break for an already beleaguered Divas division which, depending on what rumor source you believe, will be losing Kharma (or won't be losing Kharma) to anything from pregnancy to a bad back to a really rough case of indigestion to being sent down for retooling because the other Divas weren't smart, sexy or powerful enough to stand up to her Awesome fury. Of course, nothing has really been confirmed from a primary source about Kharma, so yeah, that was an exercise in snark and futility.

But the real story here is that Layla will be missing time. It's a shame because she's really come into her own in the last year or so, and she was miles away the hottest Diva on the roster. I know that's a shallow reason, but I am a guy, and THAT'S ALL US GUYS THINK ABOUT ARE TITZ AND SAMMICHES AMIRITE?

Anyway, here's to wishing Layla a speedy and full recovery.

Instant Feedback: Macho Forever

This was a very schizoid RAW. The good stuff was good, and when RAW is good, usually it has some good wrestling on it. That was the case tonight. The main event tag match was good (stupid finish aside), as was the three minute Evan Bourne/Jack Swagger match and the United States Championship match too. I also dug the opening segment. You know, R-Truth has been hit or miss since turning heel, but at the same time it's surreal, and in a way, I can dig surreal. "I WANT MY SON BACK" was just the weirdest thing I've heard, but in a way, it worked.

The best thing that happened in terms of storyline advancement though was the break-up between Alex Riley and The Miz. Seriously, it came out of nowhere as how awesome it was. Miz was in rare form tearing Riley a new one, but then what happened when it came to blows was just epic. If they actually knew how to follow up on anyone's initial moment, they would have created a new midcard face attraction to set loose on Smackdown, but I have my doubts. That being said, WOW, the intensity on that beatdown was AMAZING. Riley proved to me that he's got more than just a knack for the promo tonight.

That being said, the misses were pretty bad. For one, do we need to see another hit-and-run angle? Big Show getting struck by a car was bad, but what was worse was how they dragged the segment out. Also, the Kharma stuff... again, this is where I'd say I'd give them the benefit of the doubt on following up a disappointing segment that made a U-turn in the narrative, but does WWE Creative really deserve that benefit? I felt like the people in the Simpson household felt when they saw the debut of Poochie. They could have gone to the fireworks factory! Dammit! Again, this could be good, but at the same time, yeah, I don't have much faith.

But yeah, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Macho Man tribute, and it was so well done. Bravo, the WWE video and production department did it again. I'm not the biggest Coldplay fan, but the song was definitely the perfect fit for the montage. Macho Forever. I'm glad that they finally gave him the treatment, even if it took them until he died to get that.
